Since starting my course at The Institute of Integrative Nutrition I am learning to become a lot more productive with my time. Rather than wasting hours watching the pointless drama unfold in The Kardashians or the latest gory instalment of The Vampire Diaries, I am now dedicating my time to learning as much as possible about nutrition and the food industry. I’ve realised if I add up all the hours spent endlessly watching pointless videos on Facebook, flicking through the latest celeb gossip or having a lie in for no apparent reason, I actually have a lot of time on my hands that I can utilise for much better things. So it was time I made some changes…
As a result of the new productive me, I started to watch some Netflix documentaries in my spare time that would be informative and educational in the area of food and nutrition. And wow, I am so glad I did! These fantastic documentaries have hugely opened my eyes to a world I never knew existed. From disease being caused by man’s modern-day diet, to how our meat and dairy consumption is literally destroying the planet! I was totally blown away by what I saw.
So I thought it might be useful to do a quick rundown of each film I watched, what it’s about and the kind of impact it had on me. Plus it might inspire you to watch a couple of them for yourself. So let’s get down to business.
Before watching this documentary I was worried that the film would be centred around the slaughter of animals for our consumption, but my brother (an avid vegan) assured me that this was not the case, and he was right. This documentary hugely opened my eyes to how man’s modern day consumption of meat is literally destroying the planet. Did you know that livestock and their byproducts account for at least 32,000 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, or 51% of all worldwide greenhouse gas emissions! What? Seriously? Then why do we not know about this? This should be plastered across the news for us all to see! To find out why this isn’t the case you will just have to check out the documentary for yourself. For me the facts it produced were beyond alarming and some that I just couldn’t ignore. Like did you know 2,500 gallons of water are needed to produce 1 pound of beef or that 1,000 gallons of water are required to produce 1 gallon of milk! After watching this film even my South African husband who lives, eats and breathes meat decided that maybe he should cut down his meat consumption for the sake of our planet. Now that’s saying something!
Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead
This was an interesting film based around a man, Joe Cross, who was overweight and suffering from a debilitating auto immune disease. This film follows Joe’s journey to regain his health through the magic of juicing. For 30 days he only drank blended fruit and vegetable juice for breakfast, lunch and dinner and at the end of the 30 days his health had been transformed. So much so, he decided to increase the juice fast for another 30 days as he simply felt so good on the diet and had lost so much weight. He had renewed energy and was able to think clearer. This is an inspiring film that makes you realise the power that fruits and vegetables have and that maybe food really is medicine for the body. Particularly interesting for me, was when Joe met a lady on his journey who suffered with regular migraines who was inspired to do a juice fast herself to improve her health, and the results spoke for themselves. By day 10 of the fast she had not suffered with a single migraine or headache. In the end Joe was able to come off all his medication as his auto-immune condition had completely disappeared. He now lives a happy and healthy life. A truly inspiring film and it made me want to go out straight away and buy a juicer!
Forks Over Knives
Forks Over Knives is an extremely powerful documentary that claims a plant-based diet is able to reverse degenerative diseases. This is done by removing all animal products completely from your diet and essentially becoming vegan. The film is packed full of scientific facts that support this theory that proves that by eating meat and dairy products it can actually turn on the cancerous cells in our bodies that would otherwise have laid dormant with a plant-based diet. The scientists involved undertook the most comprehensive health related investigation in modern times and their research led them to conclude that diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even several forms of cancer could almost always be prevented, but in so many cases reversed with a plant based diet. It’s another documentary that promotes that food is medicine for the body which makes me think that there has to be something in this, right? This film reconfirmed to me that the plant based diet I am currently adopting in order to reduce my migraines is the way to go. After all, science has proved it so. This was my favourite documentary but watch it at your own risk. Be prepared to come out of it never wanting to eat meat or dairy again!
Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead 2
After Joe’s original film Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead was such a huge success and watched by over 20 million people, Joe is back in a second instalment to see how his juicing craze has swept across America and amazingly to many corners of the globe. The juicing movement has impacted the lives of so many and he visits those people to check in and see the positive changes they have made. Joe also looks at the bigger picture and how hard it is to maintain a healthy lifestyle in the modern day unhealthy world that we live in. He also discovers on his journey that healthy eating is only one aspect of living a healthy life, which intrigued me as the holistic nutrition course I am currently studying also adopts this same approach. Health is not only the food we eat but is our relationships, how active we are and what drives us to get out of bed in the morning. This film is a fantastic sequel if you enjoyed the first and one, and once again we have come to learn that what we put in our mouths directly affects our health. This is an uplifting documentary that shows through the power of correct nutrition, community and with the right support ultimately anyone can change their health with the power of fruits and vegetables. It’s not rocket science is it?
This documentary focuses on how diet can play a huge role in treating illnesses such as cancer, heart disease and depression. Is it me, or have I heard this before somewhere? Hmmmmm. This film talks about the pesticides we smother our fruit and vegetables in and how the soil we plant our foods in is so deficient in nutrients that it reflects nowadays in the food we eat. The film also talks about how vitamin supplements are so powerful and how they help to heal yourself from various conditions if you have a high enough dose. The most controversial part of the documentary was when it talked about how there is no money in the population being healthy and it raised the ethics behind the Pharmaceutical companies and their practices. This is a thought provoking film that covers so many subjects and leaves you really wondering what is actually going on in the medical industry today. My first reaction after watching this documentary was to go out and find the highest dose of organic vitamin C possible and start taking it!
The Kids Menu
The Kids Menu is brought to you from the same man, Joe Cross who was featured in Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. Joe is back but this time to tackle the obesity epidemic in children across America. This film looks into how to healthy food can be made more affordable and how we need to educate children, parents and teachers about making better food choices. It also looks into how by marketing celebrities and linking them to certain food brands, children are drawn to eating these unhealthy foods. There are some inspiring children in this documentary who have taken action themselves towards eating a healthier diet and consequently the adults and parents have followed their lead. Some amazing projects such as Food Corps have been rolled out across various schools in America that are making big changes to the health of our children. This company gives hands on lessons in gardening, teaching kids how to grow their own fruit and vegetables and finally how to cook them. This is fantastic watch and one that really gets you thinking about how we can all play a role in our communities and make healthier food choices for ourselves and our families. Another great film by Joe Cross!
So there we have it! Some thought provoking, mind blowing documentaries for you to get your teeth stuck into. For me, these films have completely changed the way I view the food we eat, the health problems we face as a population and the devastating effect we are having on our planet. But do you know what, after watching all these films the very same message seemed to be repeated over, and over, and over, and OVER again! Any guesses what it is?
