Did you know that the beliefs we hold true to ourselves shape the world we live in, the choices that we make and the way our future is dictated? If this is the case then maybe it’s a good idea for us to regularly check in with the beliefs that we hold to evaluate if these are having a positive or negative impact on our lives.
Our beliefs are normally formed by outside influences such as our family, friends, colleagues, religions, our environment, society etc. but what we don’t realise is, these beliefs can also be formed by the medical professionals we visit in order to heal ourselves from our ailments. Studies have shown that just that famous ‘white coat’ and a visit to a shiny doctor’s office alone is enough to initiate the body’s own healing and do you know why – Belief! Plain and simple! Our belief is in the doctor’s ability to heal. Society has trained us that when sickness comes we seek out a medical professional in order for them to heal us, which means we have effectively been taught that we are powerless in healing our own bodies. This has been subconsciously ingrained in us by society without us even knowing it. We surrender to the doctor’s diagnosis which effectively leaves us with our hands tied behind our backs and at the mercy of their every word. Maybe it’s time that we take some of this power back right?
I have learnt that symptoms are our bodies way of communicating with us and that’s a good thing, so don’t try and cover them up or make them go away with a pill or treatment. Listen to what your body is telling you, this is where you will find the key to healing your ailment at the root cause and prevent it from returning. Ok, so I’ll come back to this point a little later on but for now I need to backtrack slightly for this blog to make sense.
This week I had an epiphany! A real ‘light bulb, smack me in the face, wake the hell up, what are you doing’ moment! As you might know by now from reading a couple of my blogs, my migraines have dramatically reduced to nearly nothing now which is incredible. However, instead I have been struggling with muscle tenderness in my head, neck and shoulders which has been giving me really bad daily tension-type headaches, so of course I wanted to do something about it. Therefore back in October I saw a Muscle Specialist who advised me that it would be worth trying some physiotherapy to help lessen my headaches by using massage, acupuncture and strengthening exercises. Great, I thought to myself, however what I didn’t know was this was going to cause me no end of pain, so much so that I came to a point when I just couldn’t take anymore. It only gave me a headache on top of my already bad headache. Just brilliant! – but if my holistic nutrition course has taught me anything recently, it’s just how important it is to listen to your body and what it’s telling you. And my body has been screaming at the top of its lungs for months now “PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, NO MORE PHYSIO!!!”. So I finally listened and decided enough was enough, something obviously wasn’t working for me.
As I sat in the waiting room for my follow up appointment with the Muscle Specialist, the epiphany suddenly hit me! BAM! Straight in the face! What on earth was I doing here? Why am I going through this once again? Why didn’t I just trust my body’s own ability to heal itself? I had done it once before with my chronic migraines so surely I would be able to heal myself from some pesky tension headaches. Right?
I knew the answer deep down. Of course I could, I reassured myself. The funny thing was that when I went in to see the doctor and told him that I think I need a break from all treatment he simply agreed with me! Just goes to show that sometimes even the best of the best don’t actually know how to help you.
Suddenly I had another realisation, I had totally surrendered to the prognosis that the Physiotherapist had given me. She had told me that she expected it would take me six months minimum to improve my condition and to get me back into gentle exercise again. And do you know what, as I had truly believed her prognosis I realised that I had been living within these constraints and I had taken on this belief. Of course it was going to take me six months as I believed I wasn’t truly capable of achieving anything more than this. The mind is so incredibly powerful that what your mind believes your body will achieve, which could either be detrimental or advantageous to your health. How could she predict what my body is capable of or how long it will take for me to respond to treatment? Everyone is different right? Why couldn’t I just get straight back into exercise? Who said that I need to take this so slowly? It just goes to show how important your beliefs can be, especially in the healing process.
From this point onwards I had this pang of excitement and invigoration rush through my body as I knew I was now in charge again. In charge of myself, my healing and my future. No one else! I had done it once before so surely I could do it again. Yes, it’s going to take time and by no means is it going to be easy, but the bottom line is that I believe it’s possible so I will get there, it’s just a case of when not if. So instead of focusing my morning Dr Joe Dispenza’s meditations on my migraines anymore, I now focus them on seeing my muscles completely recovered, my body flexible and healthy and seeing myself thrive at any physical activity I take part in. As I close my eyes I visualise myself so physically fit I am enrolling myself in a Personal Trainer course, limbering up in preparation for a dance showcase and crossing the finish line to a marathon as my husband embraces me in his arms and tells me how proud of me he is. And when I come out of my meditation, boy do I feel like I can conquer the world.
So, by feeling the emotions that you would feel as if you already had achieved these outcomes in your life, the body literally makes a new pharmacy of chemicals to match these events, creating new neural pathways in the brain and the body responds accordingly in creating this new life for you which ultimately then helps you create new positive beliefs in your future that will not only serve you but will push you to achieve whatever you thought was possible! By no means am I saying don’t go and see a doctor or a specialist for your ailments, all I am suggesting is that maybe it’s a good idea just to check in with yourself now and again to see if the beliefs you hold will assist you in your healing or hold you back. Remember – whatever the mind can conceive, the body will achieve…
