December 1st, 2015 I published my first ever blog post titled, “It can only get better”. Strewn across my bedroom floor, gripping my head from the relentless pain was where I began, but little did I know at the time that this illness had been sent to me as a gift.
A gift that led me to discover a purpose bigger than I ever could have dreamed of, happiness on a level that I never knew existed and life more beautiful, phenomenal and abundant than I ever imagined possible.
It was part of my plan all along. I just couldn’t see it at the time.
From the beginning of this journey, no matter what people told me, I knew I was going to get better. I call it a mix of determination, a certain degree of stubbornness and the will to thrive in life and not just survive. I knew I was destined for more.
So after conventional medicine failed me, I decided to go it alone and become my own doctor, at which point my healing truly began…
I became a woman on a mission, possessed with the dream of becoming free. I spent endless hours reading, googling, researching, exploring and discovering the world of healing which led me to learn so much.
- Mind-body medicine
- How important the power of belief was in healing
- Food as medicine for the body
- Meditation and Mindfulness
- How important self-love was to heal
- My nervous system and how to keep it at bay
- Alternative therapies
- How visualising your future every day propels your healing
- Toxins and how they cause illness in the body
- How to use supplements
- Anxiety and mental health
- The power of self-care as prevention
- How my beliefs impacted my health
And too much more to list.
So after an immense amount of hard work, falling down and getting back up too many times to count, an inconceivable amount of headaches, enough tears to fill a river, a tremendous amount of pain and after the hardest three years of my life, I became free.
I actually did it.
How My Illness Changed Me
Before I got sick, I took the simple things in life for granted, such as being able to go for a quick catch up with a friend, taking a walk outside in nature or even being able to work a normal job. But since regaining my freedom, I now see life through a new lens.
I am so grateful for the smallest of things because at one point I had everything taken away from me. Some people on this planet that never suffer hardships or immense struggles, will never get to see how abundant and beautiful life is each and every day, hence why this illness is such a gift that I will always be grateful for.
Chronic migraines also made me a more compassionate, loving and kind person. Previously I would say I was pretty judgmental and spent a lot of my time aimlessly gossiping with the wrong kind of friends. Instead, I now adore lifting people up rather than bringing people down, supporting others in their endeavours and helping them overcome challenges. We humans are all equal, so smile, love and be kind to everyone you meet because you have no idea what battle they may be going through.
What My Illness Taught Me
My illness taught me many things but the biggest lesson I learned is that if you want something bad enough, work hard enough, never, ever give up and believe that it will happen with everything inside of you, then ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE! Seriously, it really is.
I wish I had known this when I was trying to make it as a professional dancer years ago because I had so much self-doubt that I know I sabotaged my own success. On the positive side, I’m only 32 and have the rest of my life ahead of me to apply this incredible lesson which I am hugely grateful for. This has created this intense passion and drive inside of me that wants to go out into the world and achieve greatness because I have now the belief that anything is possible. I just have to go out and make it happen.
How Out Of Pain Becomes Purpose
As I began my self-healing journey, my intense search to become free led me to discover a whole new passion.
Health and wellness.
I just could not get enough, and as a result, I decided to enrol in a course to become a Health and Wellness Coach at the prestigious Institute of Integrative Nutrition. This course changed my life in many ways and confirmed to me that my purpose was to use my personal healing experience along with my training as a Health Coach, to help other migraine sufferers break free. Additionally, IIN brought into my life the most incredible community and the most beautiful friends/people I have ever met.
I also developed this other passion for personal development. After learning that anything is possible in life, I had this new found determination and drive to become the best person I could be. Now I spend my time listening to educational podcasts in the area of health and wellness to enhance my knowledge, investing in courses to further my skills and reading and learning from as many books/resources as I can.
And during this time that the new me started to evolve, magical things started to happen. I was approached by another IIN graduate who had suffered from chronic migraines for 13 years who had also broken free using a similar process as myself.
He advised me he was setting up a company called Head Health and his aim was to create an 18-week educational migraine coaching program that would take sufferers from chronic to freedom. Alongside the coaching program, he had created some of the most incredible technology that would work in conjunction with it. I was blown away and it wasn’t long before we began working together.
Suddenly I knew that THIS was the reason I got sick. I was being prepared for something big.
Fast forward to over a year later and I am proud to say I am now the Content Director for Head Health, Inc and have a passion and drive bigger than I could have ever imagined. Our dream and goal is to make Head Health the future of migraine care and for the program to be covered by in insurance across America so it’s accessible to all and eventually the world.
I’ve learned that if your dreams don’t scare you, then they aren’t big enough.
How Life Is Different Post Illness
It’s actually pretty hard to put into words how my life is now.
Imagine living your life in black and white for so long and being tied to a life indoors, and then suddenly you are set completely free can see every colour in the rainbow again. It’s like that. The world just suddenly seems so vibrant, alive and more beautiful than ever before.
It’s like being reborn and being told that you have the power and ability to create the life of your dreams. I regularly become overwhelmed with excitement for what lies ahead for me. I’m like a small child so excited to go to Disneyland that sometimes I can’t sleep.
I now have an abundant social life with the most beautiful souls as friends, the most incredible job that I love and is flexible as I can do it from anywhere in the world and the icing on the cake, I can now dance again. Now that was true freedom for me.
As I stepped back into the dance studio after almost five years, I knew I was back. Not only was I back, I was a totally new Kristie Jane.
One thousand times happier than before….
