Rewind a year ago, I had no idea what a podcast was. Now fast forward to the present day and I literally have no idea how I lived without them. No matter where I am, I’m tuning in. In the gym, doing the grocery shop, or listening along in the car. I am obsessed, especially with one in particular.
The School of Greatness by Lewis Howes
If you haven’t heard of this podcast then let me tell you a little bit about it. The School of Greatness shares inspiring stories from the most brilliant business minds, world-class athletes and influential celebrities on the planet to help you find out what makes great people great.
He taps into their mindsets, how they overcome struggles, what it takes to be successful in life, what daily habits they adopt to achieve greatness and so much more.
So today I wanted to share with you ten incredible life lessons the School of Greatness taught me and how they helped me super boost my health again.
Lesson 1 – Setbacks Are Lessons In Disguise
For so long I viewed setbacks as exactly that – setbacks. But what I began to learn after listening to the podcast was that setbacks were actually opportunities in disguise. Opportunities for growth, development and to learn how to do it better the next time around.
Once I adopted this mindset my healing accelerated, because I no longer dwelled on my setbacks as failures, instead I viewed them as uncovering another piece of the puzzle that I needed in order to break free from my migraines and headaches.
Lesson 2 – You Are The Creator Of Your Life And Your Future
Through the inspirational speakers on Lewis’ podcasts, I learned that you are the sum of the actions that you repeat day in day out and if you want something bad enough then you have the power to go out and create it, no matter what it is.
No one else has the power to change their circumstances but YOU, and that really stuck with me, so I applied these lessons to my health and passionately showed up every day repeating positive actions towards my goal of regaining my health.
This powerful lesson taught me that anything is possible in life, you just have to go out there and make it happen. No one is going to do it for you.
Lesson 3 – Believe, Believe, Believe
Without belief in your goal, your vision and yourself, then nothing can be accomplished. Your actions will be half-hearted, you won’t take the steps you need to achieve your goal and it won’t actually happen because you don’t believe that it will.
This lesson was super powerful when it came to regaining my health because my belief in becoming free spurred me on when times were tough and I felt like giving up. I knew I would get there, it was just going to be a matter of time I told myself.
One day freedom would be mine and it was.
Lesson 4 – Regularly Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone
One thing that the speakers on The School of Greatness have in common is that in order to achieve success in their respective field they always, always, always have to step out of their comfort zones. No matter what, in order to grow as a person and to overcome the challenges they faced, it was essential to push themselves into the unknown because this is when breakthroughs happen.
This lesson was especially useful to me when I was doing physiotherapy to get myself back into exercise again. The whole process was so uncomfortable and consistently required me to step out of my comfort zone, so in the gym, as motivation, I used to listen along to the podcasts which kept me pushing myself.
Lesson 5 – Dream Big
This is a lesson I wished I had known when I was 10 but I am grateful to have learned it now, even in my thirties. Lewis teaches to dream big because hard work, dedication and the belief in yourself means that anything is possible in life.
I would visualize myself travelling the world having an abundance of money to look after my family, finding worldwide success in helping migraine sufferers break free, becoming an author and inspirational speaker and so much more.
I learned that the only limit you set in life is the one you give yourself.
Lesson 6 – Show Up No Matter What
Another pattern all the influential speakers have in common is that consistency in anything is key, whether it be sports, writing a best selling book or becoming healthy. Consistent actions will eventually create results, no matter how long it takes, so show up time and time again no matter whether you feel like it or not if you want to succeed.
I used this lesson and applied it to my daily routines such as my yoga and meditation practice, clean and healthy eating and my self-care practices and I soon felt the results.
Lesson 7 – You Are Not A Victim Of Your Circumstances
So many of Lewis Howes’ guests have gone through adversities in life, near-death experiences, illnesses, trauma and harrowing childhoods, however, no one ever lets this stand in their way of achieving greatness. If anything this only motivates and pushes them even harder.
This realization helped me to stop wallowing in the ‘victim’ mentality of my illness, and made me stand up, make changes and turn my struggle into my strength. I am NOT my illness I would tell myself and I am going to make something good come out of this.
Lesson 8 – Hard Times Shape Who You Are
True greatness doesn’t come from a life full of ease, it comes from overcoming struggles and it’s during these hard times that it builds your character, your values, your inner strength and your resilience.
This powerful lesson resonates throughout Lewis’ speakers and makes me appreciate how lucky I am to have gone through this illness because I am now twice the person I was before I got sick.
Thank you migraines because you made me a better version of myself.
Lesson 9 – Create A World-Class Tribe
Lewis loves to talk about how important it is to create a world-class tribe and how community is so important in life, health and business and he is so right.
So I used this lesson and implemented it into my life, my health and especially my mental health which certainly flourished as a result. I eliminated negative friendships that didn’t serve me and found a beautiful community of friends/Health Coaches that I regularly meet with who fill me with so much joy and love.
My tribe supports me in my endeavours and are my biggest cheerleaders.
Lesson 10 – No Matter What, Never Ever Give Up
Probably my most favourite of all lessons and the one that resonates with me most is no matter what you are faced with, no matter how hard it may seem, no matter how many times you have failed before, never, ever give up.
Overcoming a chronic illness takes patience, resilience, commitment, perseverance and the will to keep on going come what may. Applying this lesson I believe is what has got me to where I am today, completely migraine free because I was not prepared to give up. It just wasn’t an option.
