Why Preventive Migraine Meds May Not Be The Answer To Your Headaches After All

When suffering from migraines and headaches normally your first point of call would be to see your GP/physician, and the second, a neurologist. From my experience, at this point your neurologist would talk to you about your migraines in-depth and try to work out a treatment plan for you. He/she will discuss the latest treatments on the market such as Aimovig, Botox and preventative medications such as Propranolol and Amitriptyline.

But what if I was to tell you that, by choosing one of the above options, you may actually be hindering the process of becoming migraine-free? By actually taking such treatment routes could actually only be causing you more problems and long-term pain and suffering?

Controversial I know, but let me explain why…

The symptoms that you are experiencing are telling a story. They are there for a reason, every single one of them. Your symptoms explain exactly why you are experiencing what you are experiencing. Think of them as the compass to your map and without this compass you would not know which direction to take. By covering up your symptoms you are effectively taking a permanent black marker pen and crossing them out. You have now just lost the pieces to your puzzle that could help you become free.

So when you decide to take preventative medications on a recurring basis, all you are doing is simply trying to suppress the symptoms you are experiencing by putting a temporary band-aid on them whilst never actually addressing the root cause of the problem. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been there and we all want relief from our pain, however I learned the hard way over the years and countless preventatives that this kind of approach never offers a long-term solution.

For example, if a plant started to die, you wouldn’t just constantly keep painting the leaves green, would you? When the first coat of paint started to rub off you wouldn’t just keep giving it new coats of paint. No, you would address the problem at the root cause and find a solution such as water the soil.

Migraines and headaches are no different. If you truly want long-term effective relief from your migraines and headaches you need to use the clues that are your symptoms to navigate your way to freedom.

Let me give you an example. Recently I have been suffering from tension-type headaches resulting in tightness and soreness in my neck and shoulders. I went to a doctor and he gave me some anti-inflammatory injections into the muscles to reduce the tension. It worked initially but after every treatment, a few weeks later like clockwork, the pain and headaches kept coming back.

From there I realised that I had two options. Option one was to take an additional preventative muscle medication that he was happy to give me and carry on with the injections as well for the foreseeable future, or secondly, find out ‘why‘ this was happening to me. What was causing this tension in my body in order for my muscles to react this way? So I chose the latter and through this choice, I discovered that my tension and tight muscles were being caused by anxiety, fear and many emotional issues.

Since having cognitive behavioural therapy to treat these problems, my tension has hugely reduced and continues to reduce each day. However, if I had continued to take the preventative medication option, I would still be stuck in that frustrating place.

“These pains you feel are messengers. Listen to them” – Rumi

I understand that everyone’s experience with preventives is going to be different. For some people, they may actually find long-term relief, but from my experience, after talking to many migraine sufferers over the years it tends to be a rocky road with preventives, as you find yourself flitting from one treatment to the next in hope that it may finally actually be the answer to your headaches.

I was in that space and I spent years and years going round in this circle like a headless chicken, slowly losing hope. Sometimes I found the relief I was after, but it was only ever temporary.

And temporary wasn’t good enough for me so I changed my approach.

Can you relate to this? I would love to hear your feedback on this controversial post. I welcome your comments below…

  1. Thank you so much for your inspiring writing! My son has suffered with migraines since he was 5, he is now 12 and on many different medications daily.
Now he has a migraine once a month.
I would love for him to be pain free. If you feel you could help it would be amazing yet so far nothing has helped.
    Many thanks

    1. Hi Donna, thank you for your message. That is great that his migraines have reduced so much but I understand of course you would would want your son to be completely free. Have you looked into your sons diet? This could be a big one. Let me know.
