Is Your Environment Negatively Affecting Your Health?

As I have gone through this health journey and after training as a holistic health coach, I have now come to understand that every single aspect of our lives affects our health.

Everything from the food that we put into our body, the relationships in our lives, the media that we choose to consume, the products that we use, the thoughts that we have, the beliefs that we hold and so, so much more.

So today I wanted to delve into a few aspects of your environment that may be negatively affecting your health that you may not be aware of and how to make positive changes in these areas.

Right, let’s dive in…

    1. Cleaning products

Who knew that cleaning products could be so toxic to our health? A recent study showed that cleaning your house may be as bad as smoking 20 cigarettes a day because cleaning products have such a harmful effect on the respiratory system. [1] Cleaning products are toxins and these toxins have been shown to;

  • Interfere with hormone function
  • Feed cancer
  • Interfere with glucose and cholesterol metabolism
  • Increase inflammation
  • Alter thyroid metabolism
  • Impair central appetite regulation

Luckily nowadays there are products on the market that aren’t toxic that we can make a switch to. Click here to find advice on how to pick the healthiest cleaning products provided by the very informative Environmental Working Group.

   2. Your relationships

For a long time, I never evaluated the relationships in my life, they just were ‘what they were’ and I didn’t think that they had a correlation to my health. However, when I began looking at them objectively and understanding that certain people caused me anxiety, tension or stress, sometimes even before meeting them, I understood that this actually affected my wellbeing.

So take a look at the people around you and ask yourself;

  • How do certain friends/family make you feel? Calm and relaxed or exhausted and drained?
  • Do you feel good after your interactions or do you feel tense and stressed?
  • What do they talk about and focus on? Positivity? Or negativity and drama?

Negative relationships will negatively affect your health, I can assure you of this, so take some time to do an inventory of the people in your life and ask yourself – Does this person serve my health?

   3. Cosmetics/Skincare products

Once again, I had no idea that the products that we put on our skin had any correlation to our health, but they do. And to quote renowned functional medicine doctor Dr Mark Hyman “What you put on your skin matters just as much as what you put in your mouth”. [3]

Did you know that the average women uses roughly 12 beauty products and within many of them lurk thousands of chemicals such as phthalates, synthetics colours, parabens, formaldehyde and propylene glycol? I know, scary right. These chemicals have been shown to create free radical damage, disrupt hormones and some even have carcinogenic properties!    4. News/TV outlets

News and TV outlets are designed to keep you hooked and tuned in for as long as possible, hence why the news only shows stories of destruction, pain, and suffering and as a result can bring up many emotions such as anxiety, worry, fear, distress and more and it’s when we live in those emotions on a day to day basis, it can create pain and suffering.

But the great thing is that we have the power to change this. Think about this.

Do you either begin your day with images of war, a worrying warning about climate change and political unrest in your country? Or begin your day listening to an uplifting podcast, audio-book or an inspiring YouTube video with positive uplifting messages of hope, success stories, and human potential? Imagine how different you would feel after both?

So take a moment to check in with yourself and see how the content you are watching and listening to makes you feel.

How can this help my migraines?

The whole body is an interconnected system so toxins, stress, anxiety, and an overstimulated nervous system will all affect your migraines because it is not just your head you are trying to treat. The whole body needs to be in true harmony in order for you to become headache free.

  1. This is such a great post! I remember how big of a difference I experienced when I threw out all my cleaning products and swapped them for a natural brand called Grove. And I know starting my day with an educational or uplifting podcast has made a difference. I’m not sure how it’s impacting my migraines, but I certainly find myself looking for a podcast throughout my day rather than scrolling through social media.

    1. Ah thank you for your comment. I am so glad you enjoyed the post and could relate to it. This is great to hear that you noticed the difference between the cleaning products. I know for me I had no idea for years how this was affecting my health. Great work on the podcast too. I think on a subconscious level this will reduce anxiety and stress without us even knowing about it. Thanks for taking the time to read the article.
